The release of Song Sung Blue has sparked controversy, as the son of the late musician has publicly criticized its stars. Michael Sardina Jr., the son of real-life performer Mike Sardina, has criticized Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson over their involvement in the film. He also accused the production of misrepresenting his father’s legacy and excluding him from the story.
Mike Sardina’s son blasts Song Sung Blue and its stars
Song Sung Blue, the newly released biographical drama starring Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman, has earned praise from critics and audiences. However, the film has sparked sharp criticism from Michael “Mike” Sardina Jr., the son of the late musician whose life partially inspired the project.
Directed by Craig Brewer, the film chronicles the rise of real-life Milwaukee-based Neil Diamond tribute performers Mike “Lightning” Sardina and Claire “Thunder” Sardina, portrayed by Jackman and Hudson. However, Sardina Jr. says the on-screen version bears little resemblance to reality.
“My father’s rolling in his grave right now,” Sardina Jr. told the Daily Mail. He claims that the movie “completely destroyed the one thing my father worked his entire life to pass on — his legacy.”
Sardina Jr. further alleged that he was deliberately excluded from the story despite being his father’s only son. Although he and his sister Angelina were credited as consultants, he said that he was paid “a pathetic $30,000.”
Sardina Jr. also stated that his invitation to film’s New York City premiere came with restrictions, alleging he was told to avoid cast members and media. He also criticized Hudson and Jackman for failing to acknowledge him during promotional appearances.
“Every interview that those monsters have been on national television don’t even mention my existence at all, even though I was the most prevalent force in my father’s life,” he said.
Angelina Sardina, who is portrayed in the film by King Princess, also voiced similar frustrations. “The only thing that was true is the love between my dad and Claire. It’s a beautiful story, but that’s not how it went down. And I guess that’s what’s upsetting because it’s a lie,” she said.
