The Shining to stream on Peacock very soon

Peacock has confirmed that Stanley Kubrick’s horror movie The Shining will soon join its streaming catalog. The 1980 classic is scheduled to arrive on the platform on January 1, 2026 (via Movie Web).

Directed by Kubrick and adapted from Stephen King’s 1977 novel, The Shining remains one of the most influential psychological horror films ever released. The story follows Jack Torrance, a struggling writer. He accepts a winter caretaker position at the remote Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Jack relocates to the isolated property with his wife Wendy and young son Danny, intending to use the quiet months to focus on his work.

As winter sets in and the hotel becomes completely cut off from the outside world, unsettling events begin to unfold. Danny, who possesses a psychic ability, experiences disturbing visions related to the hotel’s violent past. Meanwhile, Jack’s mental state deteriorates under the hotel’s influence, pushing him toward paranoia and rage.

The film stars Jack Nicholson in one of his most iconic performances as Jack Torrance. Others include Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance, Danny Lloyd as Danny “Doc” Torrance, Scatman Crothers as Dick Hallorann, and Barry Nelson as Stuart Ullman.

Over the years, The Shining has earned widespread critical acclaim. The film currently holds an 84 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 111 reviews. Meanwhile, audiences have rated it even higher, with a 93 percent Popcornmeter score.

The movie is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror movies of all time and one of Stanley Kubrick’s finest works.
