Freeform Reveals the Cast of Marvel’s ‘New Warriors’

Move over Anna Kendrick and Mae Whitman! There’s finally a Squirrel Girl on TV, and it’s Milana Vayntrub. While both Kendrick and Whitman have previously expressed interest in bringing Marvel’s breakout character to live-action, Vayntrub will headline the New Warriors TV series on Freeform.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story about Vyntrub’s casting and the rest of the performers lined up for New Warriors. It’s important to note that this series will be a comedy, unlike the comic book series that inspired it. Rounding out the cast are Derek Theler as Mister Immortal; with Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher; Calum Worthy as Speedball; Matthew Moy as Microbe, and Kate Comer as Debrii. Despite the comic book artwork below, this is the first time that this lineup of characters has ever been on the same team.

It’s not clear how the New Warriors will function as a comedy series. In the ’90s, the team was considered to be one of Marvel’s top superhero groups alongside the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Somehow, the next generation of Marvel heroes were reduced to reality show jokes by 2006, before they were unceremoniously killed off in Marvel’s Civil War. Within the comic book realm, the team’s reputation has never recovered from that…although there have been a few attempts to reboot the series.

New Warriors has a ten-episode first season order from Freeform, and it will premiere in 2018.
