Watch the First Trailer for Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’

Have you ever wondered why Marvel has pushed the Inhumans so hard for the last few years? It really comes down to the X-Men. Even the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs an explanation for why regular people can suddenly have superpowers, but there are no mutants in this world. But Inhumans can fill that function, and they’ve essentially become Marvel’s replacement mutants.

For a while, there was actually going to be an Inhumans movie from Marvel Studios. But that fell off the production slate around the time that Kevin Feige was more or less able to run Marvel Studios without reporting back to Marvel’s publishing division. Consequently, the Inhumans ended up as a TV series at ABC. But the dream of a movie isn’t dead, since the first two episodes of the series will be released in IMAX theaters on September 1. The series will then premiere on ABC on September 29.

Earlier today, ABC and Marvel unveiled the first trailer for the series, which introduces former Hell on Wheels star Anson Mount as Black Bolt. Whether the series will call him by his real name, Blackagar Boltagon, remains to be seen. But he is the king of his people and the head of the royal family…but not for long. There’s been a coup on the moon, and Black Bolt is out!

You may be wondering about the giant dog that can teleport from the moon to Hawaii. That’s Lockjaw, a member of the Pet Avengers. Seriously. But probably not in the MCU, because that would be too silly. Here’s the official description for all of you non-comic book fans.

“Marvel’s Inhumans explores the never-before-told epic adventure of the royal family including Black Bolt, the enigmatic, commanding King of the Inhumans, with a voice so powerful that the slightest whisper can destroy a city. After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where they are greeted with surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them. Now they must find a way to reunite with each other and return to their home before their way of life is destroyed forever.”
