Kendrick Lamar is the talk of the music world so it’s only fitting that the Grammy-winning rapper sat down with Beats 1 Radio host Zane Lowe for his first interview since releasing his latest album, DAMN.

During the 45-minute conversation, Lamar touches on a variety of topics, including comparisons to Eminem, his writing process, and what he took away from his meeting with President Obama, ” [Obama] says, ‘Change don’t start when I’m here. It starts once we leave the space we’re in.’ Subconsciously, that goes to the idea of me self-evaluating my own personal thoughts, the way I think, what I’m gonna take from this meeting and do on the outside. In this moment of time, I have to think further.”

Of course, a lot of what Lamar has been thinking about is Damn, which has been hailed as a ground-breaking album that has shot the Compton rapper to superstardom.

“I’ve been attached to this piece of art for the last year and some change, “says Lamar. “I’ve indulged so much I don’t even want to hear it. I just want to give it to the people and let them take it and live with it and breathe it. Then when I come back on that stage, that’s when I want to feel it. That’s when I want to see it, that’s when I want to see your reaction.”

Lamar is getting lots of love for Damn, but his biggest fan is his mom, who sent him a hilarious text message that has since gone viral since he shared it on his Instagram.
