The Avengers Video Game is On Its Way, But Don’t Expect it For a While

The Avengers video game is finally, officially on its way, and it will be developed by Crystal Dynamics in conjunction with Square Enix. However, we won’t be seeing it for a long time.

A new multi-game partnership between Square Enix and Marvel based upon The Avengers franchise was announced today, though further details regarding this project will not be announced until 2018. This means that the game is still a long way off from being released, with it potentially tying in to the next entry in the film series, with Infinity War releasing on May 4, 2018.

Details are light on the ground regarding the project outside of its debut trailer, which sees a female narrator explaining how “the world will always need heroes” while the camera pans above the discarded equipment of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. It’s clear that the game takes place after The Avengers’ formation, with its “reassemble” slogan indicating that it comes following a period of unrest for the team of superheroes, potentially after the events of Captain America: Civil War and leading into the new movie.

We’ve been waiting for a proper Avengers licensed game for quite some time, with Marvel only greenlighting LEGO games and the woeful Xbox 360, Kinect-based game Battle for Earth. A first-person brawler was planned for 2012 to coincide with the release of the first Avengers movie, though this was canned and until now no developer had stepped up to the plate to adapt the bank-rolling franchise. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics already have a high-quality track record, with the studios working with one another to develop the well-received Tomb Raider reboot and its accomplished sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
