‘Star Trek: Discovery’ May Be Delayed… Again

The premiere of Star Trek: Discovery has already been pushed once, and the prospect of it happening again helped force original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, out of the new series. And while the show appears to be finally ready to begin filming, there may still be an additional delay.

Deadline is reporting that Star Trek: Discovery‘s planned premiere in May is potentially getting pushed back. And while CBS All Access didn’t directly comment on the report, its official statement seems to leave open the possibility of a new premiere window. “Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.”

Considering the issue at hand, the departure of Fuller from his dream job seems like it was premature. Frankly, the entire development process for this series seemed unusually rushed, and its original January premiere never seemed to be very realistic. While a May launch is still possible, the best thing for Star Trek: Discovery would probably be more time for the creative team and the cast to do justice to the franchise.

It was also announced today that James Frain is joining Star Trek: Discovery as Sarek, Spock’s father. On the original series, Sarek was a Vulcan ambassador and an ally to the crew of the Enterprise. While Fuller indicated that characters from the first Star Trek weren’t likely to appear in the first season, Sarek is the first confirmation that it may not be a definitive rule for the season.
