HBO Is Still Exploring ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Possibilities

There are only two seasons left of Game of Thrones, and HBO still doesn’t have a spinoff or prequel series lined up. But it’s not for lack of trying. And it makes perfect sense why the network is so eager to keep George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world alive. The series is a rare combination of a critically acclaimed series and an enormously popular phenomenon. HBO would have to be crazy to not try to make something happen, even if the network doesn’t appear to have a vision about what the spinoff/prequel should be.

While speaking to Variety and other reporters at the TCA Press Tour, HBO’s Casey Bloys was finally asked about the network’s spinoff plans for Game of Thrones. He replied “All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it.”

Bloys isn’t kidding about GoT’s rich world. George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series has been incredibly dense, with a real sense of history behind them. Showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff may be moving on after the eighth and final season, so the network would need to find someone to be the new showrunner who can handle the immense scope.

Martin himself has suggested that the Game of Thrones prequel/spinoff could be a series of TV movies based on his short novellas, the Tales of Dunk and Egg. However, some fans seem to be more interested in seeing things like Robert’s Rebellion, which shaped the course of the show’s history decades before it began.

HBO still has some time to figure out it’s next move for the franchise, since Game of Thrones season 7 will be released next summer, and the eighth season will follow in 2018.
