Exclusive | Listen To 3 Music Tracks From ‘Trollhunters’

Last month, Guillermo del Toro and DreamWorks Animation unleashed Trollhunters, a new Netflix original animated series. The show stars the late Anton Yelchin as Jim Lake Jr., a 15-year old boy who suddenly finds himself empowered as a Trollhunter and tasked with defending the innocent. In just a few weeks, the series has already become a fan favorite, and we’re eagerly awaiting word about the second season.

In the meantime, composers Tim Davies and Alexander Desplat have been honored for their musical contributions to Trollhunters with an Annie nomination for Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production. Today, CraveOnline is proud to present three of Davies’ musical tracks from the Trollhunters’ soundtracks, in addition to his thoughts on the series.

When asked to describe his work on Trollhunters, Davies said “At street level it is quite suburban and playful, Guillermo del Toro wanted an Amblin kind of feel for it. You can hear this in the opening of the Suite track, which is from when we first see Jim and Toby riding their bikes around the neighborhood. Then there is the more magical fantasy of the amulet that gives Jim his powers and the Trollmarket. But always lurking in the shadows (sunlight turns them to stone) are the evil trolls, so there is a fair bit of dark music too.”

“The animation is so vivid that it is not like the old days where the music had to bring it all to life,” added Davies. “There are places where there is comedy, and that requires a more traditional animation approach, “Mickey Mousing” as they call it. The one thing that does make it tricky is that each episode is only 22 minutes and is not only part of the larger series arc, but has its own self-contained story, so the pace is pretty quick. I don’t have a lot of time to set a scene or play out; just as I get settled it has to change!”

Davies also briefly spoke about the opportunity to work with del Toro on this show. “Guillermo is awesome to work with as he really makes you feel like you are part of the creative process. He casts people in jobs that they are going to naturally succeed at. I don’t have to try too hard to write the music, he picked me knowing this is just how I write when inspired by this world that he created.”

All 26 episodes of Trollhunter season 1 are currently available on Netflix.
