Dynamite Entertainment Will Publish ‘John Wick’ Comics In 2017

John Wick is coming back to theaters in about two months, but Dynamite Entertainment plans to keep him in the business a little bit longer.

Dynamite has announced that it will be publishing John Wick comics in 2017, thanks to a new deal with Lionsgate. However, because the deal was only announced this week, that means that the new comics won’t arrive in time to fully capitalize on John Wick: Chapter 2; which will be released on February 10, 2017.

In a statement, Dynamite Entertainment CEO Nick Barrucci said “John Wick was such an exciting film, mixing martial arts action with snappy dialogue and smart writing. As the credits rolled, you were left wanting more, and it was obvious they had the makings of a franchise. We were quick to pursue the opportunity to develop a comic book series, and are thrilled to have been granted the rights to tell all-new stories with the character!”

Along with the announcement, Dynamite passed along a few John Wick character sketches by Giovanni Valletta.

According to Dynamite, the comics will not be direct adaptations of the first two John Wick movies. That said, the first movie suggested several additional stories that could easily be explored, including John’s stint as a hitman for Viggo Tarasov, John’s relationship with his wife, John’s history with Marcus and Ms. Perkins, and the larger world of the franchise. Even some of the side characters like Winston and his Continental Hotel could be fleshed out in this format.

Dynamite didn’t announce any of the creative teams for its John Wick comics, but we expect to learn more within the next few months.
