It’s that time of year again, when the music industry looks at itself in the mirror and says “I’m good enough. I’m smart enough. And doggone it, people like me.” Okay, maybe only Kanye says that, but the self-congratulatory 59th annual Grammy nominations have been announced.

To no one’s surprise, Beyoncé leads the pack with nine Grammy nominations, followed by Drake, Rihanna, and Kanye West with eight apiece and Chance the Rapper with seven. This year’s Grammys, on Feb. 12 in Los Angeles will largely come down to the super diva showdown of Beyonce’s Lemonade versus Adele’s 25, as both will compete against Drake’s Views, Justin Bieber’s Purpose; and A Sailor’s Guide to Earth by Sturgill Simpson (the token country singer).
That’s a solid list for the grand Grammy prize, but one name that isn’t on it is Mr. West’s Life of Pablo. The Grammy hater, who has been undergoing his own personal drama, is up for four rap awards, but none for album, record or song of the year.
Ironically, it was another Windy City rapper who made music history as Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book became the first streaming-only album to receive a Grammy nomination. The critically-acclaimed independent release is essentially a mixtape that he put out by himself.
