Leonard Cohen Dies At 82

One of Canada’s most beloved singer/songwriter/poets, Leonard Cohen, has passed away. He was 82 years old.

The news was disclosed on Leonard Cohen’s Facebook page with the following post:

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.”

“Leonard Cohen was an unparalleled artist whose stunning body of original work has been embraced by generations of fans and artists alike,” Sony Music Canada said in a statement (as published by CBC News). “We are proud and feel extremely privileged to have celebrated his artistry over a career spanning six decades. The Sony Music Canada family joins the world in mourning Leonard Cohen’s passing.”

And, for the first time since the song’s release in 1984, the Leonard Cohen’s track “Hallelujah” hit the Billboard Hot 100. Despite being covered by dozens of artists over the years, the song hit the charts at No. 59 with 33,000 downloads and 3.8 million U.S. streams (National Post).
