Louise Golbey’s a breath of fresh air. The London singer-songwriter may not have enjoyed a breakout hit thus far, but her considerable talents have caused her to be noticed by a variety of major UK artists, with her having shared the stage with the likes of Paloma Faith, Jessie J and Katy B, along with being a noted favorite of Ed Sheeran. It’s not exactly difficult to see why she’s attracted a lot of support from some of the country’s most famous exports; there’s something inveigling about her unabashedly relaxed approach to her music, with her breathy vocals perfectly complementing her easy listening neo soul.
A popular figure on the UK soul and jazz scene, having performed at famous London venues such as Ronnie Scotts, the Jazz Cafe and the London Hippodrome, with each new release Golbey seems to come closer to extending her reach beyond the English capital. With her debut album Novel releasing back in 2015, the singer continues her forwards momentum with her brand new single ‘Please Don’t’, in which she looks to express a “feistier, more sassier side” not seen on her previous work.
Produced by Freemonk and featuring Dave Gerrish on guitar and Kat Deal on horns, ‘Please Don’t’ puts a wonderful full stop on Golbey’s 2016, a year that should by rights be the last she spends in relative obscurity. With a great album under her belt, a great deal of support from her hometown and appearances at Glastonbury and Isle of Wight Festival, 2017 could well be the year that the world finally gets to know Louise Golbey.
