Doug Liman Leaves ‘Gambit,’ Will Direct ‘Justice League Dark’

The DC Extended Universe is about to get darker. And that might be a good thing.

The supernatural superhero team-up film Justice League Dark has been in development for years now, under the guidance of horror maestro Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s LabyrinthPacific Rim). The film would unite such magical DC Comics characters as John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon, two of which have had their own movies before. But although the project was rumored as far back as 2012, and confirmed way back in 2013, it seemed like Justice League Dark might never come together… until now.

Variety reports that Doug Liman has been tapped to direct Justice League Dark. Doug Liman, who previously directed The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, was already set to direct 20th Century Fox’s Gambit solo movie, set in their X-Men universe, but repeated delays on that particular project seem to have pushed him into helming a competing superhero project instead.

Justice League Dark would seem to be a major tonal shift for Doug Liman, who has never directed a film even tangentially related to the horror genre before. Most of his films are straight dramas, action comedies or sci-fi stories.

No word yet on when, exactly, Doug Liman’s Justice League Dark will be released, but by the time it comes out it will be the second film version of the concept. The animated feature of Justice League Dark is due out on home video this fall.
