Superman Will Be Back in Black in ‘Justice League’

We all knew Superman was going to be back sooner than later. Even though the hero supposedly died at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year, the last shot of the film implied that he was – at the worst – “mostly” dead. And after the news last week that Warner Bros. was finally hard at work on a proper Man of Steel solo sequel, the question was merely whether he would return in his own movie or in next year’s crossover event, Justice League.

Well, Henry Cavill seems to have answered that question for us. On his Instagram account today, the actor revealed a closeup of a black costume, with the hashtag #Superman. And since Man of Steel 2 isn’t anywhere near ready for production, and since Justice League is filming right now, it appears that Superman will be back pretty much right away in Zack Snyder’s follow-up film.

Superman’s black costume made a brief but memorable appearance in the comic books back in the 1990s as the hero’s resurrection outfit of choice. Like in the movies, Superman had given his own life to save the world from Doomsday, and now, like in the comics, it appears that Superman will wear a black costume when he comes back on film.

DC Comics

It is worth noting that although Superman’s black costume has a precedent in the comics, it isn’t a particularly popular look for the hero. It’s a black bodysuit with a gaudy silver “S,” originally accompanied by one of the most unfortunate mullets in superhero history (and that’s really saying something). Like a lot of superheroes in the 1990s, Superman was forced to live through his fair share of questionable costume changes, as comic book publishers struggled to find new gimmicks in which to drive up sales, and this is – at best – one of the less offensive examples.

Granted, the black suit has its fans, and it has even made a comeback in the recent Superman comics, but the electric blue Superman look has fans too, so let’s not pretend nostalgia is necessarily a good thing to incorporate into contemporary movies. (Besides, it’s not like Zack Snyder needed even more on the nose symbology to make it clear just how “dark” he likes his superhero stories.)

Justice League will arrive in theaters on November 17, 2017, and apparently it will have Superman in it, wearing that costume.
