William Shatner has paid tribute to Walter Koenig following the actor’s death at 90. Remembering his Star Trek co-star, Shatner expressed his sadness and highlighted Koenig’s lasting connection with the franchise’s fans.

William Shatner is ‘deeply saddened’ after Walter Koenig’s passing

Koenig died at his North Hollywood home on the night of Oct. 25, surrounded by his daughter and niece, according to a statement from his representative to PEOPLE on Oct. 26.

Shatner, 95, acknowledged that he and Koenig did not know each other well outside work but said he was “deeply saddened” by the news. In an Oct. 27 tribute, Shatner wrote, “What I observed, and what so many fans have expressed over the years, was a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community.”

He added that Koenig “preferred to be among the people who had kept Star Trek alive for so many decades” and was “rarely content” to remain behind a signing table at conventions.

“That kind of genuine connection is rare, and it will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with him,” Shatner wrote. “My condolences to his family, his friends, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.”

Koenig portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Original Series from 1967 to 1969. He later reprised the role in the first six franchise films and appeared in Star Trek Generations in 1994.

George Takei, who played Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, also paid tribute to Koenig. The late actor had served as the best man at Takei’s 2008 wedding to Brad Altman. “Walter was more than Chekov,” Takei wrote on Instagram. “He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.”

“Rest well, my dear friend,” he added.

Beyond Star Trek, Koenig appeared in shows including The Lieutenant, Mr. Novak, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Gidget and I Spy.

Koenig’s representative also highlighted his impact on fans, saying, “Walter’s legacy extends far beyond the screen.” The statement praised his kindness and appreciation for the Star Trek community before concluding, “Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before. Rest in peace.”
