My Chemical Romance Apparently Broke the Cheerleader Dress Code

My Chemical Romance is facing legal action from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ parent company. The latter accused the band of using similar uniforms during a Hollywood Bowl performance. The controversy centers around the band dressing like the famous cheerleading squad in a theatrical scene.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders challenge My Chemical Romance’s concert uniforms in court

According to E! News, Pro Silver Star, the company behind the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC), filed a lawsuit against My Chemical Romance. They have requested a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction on October 23. The court filing followed the band copying the cheerleading squad’s famous blue-and-white look for their Oct. 21 concert in Los Angeles.

The performance took place during the band’s song “Teenagers.” The dancers were reportedly wearing white vests decorated with blue stars and carried blue-and-white pom poms. The performance took a sinister turn as the performers picked up rifles and participated in a staged shootout. They appeared to be shot and crawled offstage.

Pro Silver argued that the scene and lookalike uniforms may damage the cheerleaders’ reputation. They suggested that with recognizable uniforms, the spectacle of the shootout could be directly associated with members of the DCC by the audience.

“The brand DCC built on dedication, character, and community, and on decades of entertaining American troops, was thus put on a stage in a gunfight, its uniform worn by performers shown shooting and being shot,” the company stated.

The company has clarified that they are not disputing the brand’s creative direction or any message they wish to convey. Their only demand is that they discontinue their outfits. “Silver Star is not litigious, and it takes no issue with MCR’s music, its artistic ambitions, or any message Defendants seek to convey,” the filing stated. “Silver Star asks only that those performers not wear the DCC Uniform while doing it.”

The legal conflict surfaces at a time when the Dallas Cowboys are enjoying renewed attention through Netflix’s America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. The series follows the squad through auditions, training and the NFL season, offering viewers a closer look at the team behind the iconic uniforms.
