Heather McMahon Credits Taylor Swift for an Unexpected Turn of Events

Heather McMahon credited Taylor Swift with helping her escape an intense wave of online backlash following her 2025 Ryder Cup controversy. The comedian said Swift’s album release changed the news cycle just as angry golf fans continued targeting her.

McMahon faced threats after a joke involving Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy backfired at the tournament. Her experience later became the opening story in her new Hulu comedy special, By a Thread.

Heather McMahon says Taylor Swift’s album release shifted attention from her Ryder Cup controversy

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McMahon recalled how Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl helped redirect public attention. The album arrived after three days of intense criticism, giving McMahon some much-needed breathing room. “Taylor Swift really saved my ass,” she said. “It was so bad for three days, and then she dropped Life of a Showgirl. The entire news cycle had changed.”

McMahon had hosted the first tee at the 2025 Ryder Cup on Long Island. When spectators chanted “fuck you, Rory,” she tried to connect with the rowdy crowd. Her response backfired, and tournament organizers fired her. She later apologized to McIlroy, but the backlash continued.

The comedian told the outlet that men sent threats to her, her managers, and her publicists. Some even challenged her to physical fights outside restaurants. Although the experience frightened her, McMahon eventually found material for her comedy. Her Hulu special, By a Thread, opened with her account of the controversy and its aftermath. She also reflected on sexism in comedy and sports, arguing that women often struggle to earn respect in male-dominated spaces.

“Men don’t want women in their spaces,” McMahon said, describing one lesson she took from the ordeal. Despite the experience, she maintained her love for golf and attended the Masters, where she watched McIlroy win again. She said the problem involved certain fans, not the players themselves.

McMahon also discussed her long-running Pitbull impression during the interview. The rapper invited her to London for a Guinness World Records event celebrating fans wearing bald caps at his concert. Around 22,000 people arrived in time for the official count, while roughly 75,000 attended the gathering.
