Zara Larsson revealed that she has lost several business opportunities because of her outspoken views on political issues. The Swedish pop star emphasized the real-world impact of money, saying, “Money is real when it comes out into the real world, and it can affect people’s lives.”
Zara Larsson says the prospect of losing more brand deals will not stop her from speaking out
The 26-year-old spoke about the issue during the October 15 episode of Popcast by The New York Times. Larsson said, “I didn’t give a f**k. I didn’t care what brands [weren’t] going to want to work with me or what corporate businesses [were] going to shut me out because I didn’t have those opportunities. So I had no reason to like censor myself or to be scared of saying anything because it didn’t matter, you know.”
She explained that artists receive larger sums of money as they become more successful. They also get more lucrative business offers. However, she suggested that these opportunities can sometimes compromise their integrity. She added that turning down such deals can become difficult when large sums of money are involved.
However, she said, “I hope that I never reach a point where I sort of lose my soul and who I am for a bag. I think those things you just have to sort of—I don’t even want to have to balance them, but I’m trying to be a good person. I always try to be the best person I can be. And I’m sure I will make mistakes in the future, but I’m trying my best to stay true to myself.”
Zara, who has used her platform to speak out on feminism, abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the situation in Palestine, lost a $3M brand deal this year. Speaking to The Guardian, the singer revealed that she lost the deal after making a joke about abortion. She said, “I lost $3m, which is the biggest brand deal I’d been offered in my life. I was genuinely like: OK, losers!”
