Billy Joel has shared a concerning update about his hopes of performing again following his hydrocephalus diagnosis. The legendary musician says doctors have advised him against returning to the stage for now. He is awaiting further medical tests to determine whether performing will be possible.
Billy Joel says doctors have advised him against performing amid hydrocephalus diagnosis
Joel discussed his health in a rare interview with The Hollywood Reporter on October 15. He explained that his condition affects his balance and complicates everyday activities. For now, he is also prohibited from driving.
“I have to take a series of tests before I know,” Joel said. He added, “I can’t drive right now. I’m not allowed to drive.” The singer remains hopeful that further evaluations could clarify his future.
Joel explained that his neurologist raised concerns about the physical demands of live performances. “What the neurologist told me, every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion,” he revealed. The warning has forced him to reconsider his return to the stage.
The musician attributed the concerns to several aspects of performing. Loud music, lighting, stress, and the audience’s energy all contribute to the strain. Joel also acknowledged that years of rock performances affected his hearing.
“The volume. Rock and roll is loud, man,” he said. He explained that doctors believe he should avoid performing until further testing. However, Joel made clear that returning to music remains important to him.
“So they have to test me further to see if I can go back and do performing again, which I would like to be able to do,” Joel said.
“I was not a collector. I was actually a rider,” Joel explained. He said the collection grew beyond what he could reasonably ride. Proceeds from the Billy Joel motorcycle auction will support the Joel Foundation.
Joel’s comments suggest that he remains hopeful about returning to the stage, although his ability to do so will depend on further medical evaluations.
