During a TLC concert on Friday, Oct. 9, Thomas explained why Watkins could not perform. Footage of her speech appeared on The Shade Room’s Instagram page. “Some of you may not know that my group member T-Boz has sickle cell disease and sometimes, you know, she’ll have a crisis,” Thomas told the crowd. She added that Watkins needed time to recover fully.

Thomas then asked the audience to stand by her bandmate during this difficult time. “And I’m going to continue to hold it down for my sister, tonight,” she said. She also urged everyone to continue to support Watkins as she recovers.

Thomas also spoke about Watkins’ health during an Aug. 28 show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. Videos shared on social media captured her explaining that Watkins was experiencing a sickle cell episode. “But she’s so much better, and I want to ask each and every one of you to help me hold her down tonight,” Thomas said. She thanked concertgoers in advance for their support and understanding.

Watkins received her sickle cell disease diagnosis at age 7. In her memoir, A Sick Life — TLC ’n Me: Stories from On and Off the Stage, Watkins wrote, “I have to worry about it every day of my life,” adding, “You can be in so much pain you get delirious.” Fans continue to hope for her full recovery and return to the stage.
