Olivia Rodrigo once found herself getting kicked out of a birthday party at John C. McGinley’s house before she became a global pop star.
Zach Braff recalled the funny encounter while appearing on Netflix’s Shut Up Evan. He made it clear that Rodrigo had not caused any trouble. McGinley simply wanted an adults-only gathering.

ff explained that Rodrigo had become close friends with singer and actress Charlotte Lawrence, the daughter of Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence.
As per Just Jared, Braff met Rodrigo through that connection before her career exploded.
“Before Olivia blew up, she was over at the house,” Braff recalled.
Later, McGinley hosted a birthday party and made one rule clear. He wanted only adults at the gathering.
According to Braff, McGinley considered “pretty much anyone under 30” part of the younger group he did not want attending.
That did not stop Charlotte and Rodrigo from trying to join the celebration.
The two reportedly climbed over McGinley’s fence and asked whether they could come to the barbecue.
“Can we come join the barbecue, please?” Braff recalled them asking.
At the time, McGinley had no idea who Rodrigo was.
The girls briefly joined the gathering before the Scrubs actor sent them away.
“All right, you kids, get out!” McGinley told them, according to Braff.
The situation became even funnier when McGinley’s daughter walked into the room and recognized Rodrigo.
Braff said she could barely process seeing the future superstar standing inside her home.
Rodrigo handled the situation well, according to Braff, and everyone laughed before she and Charlotte left.
The timing made the story especially memorable.
Braff said Rodrigo’s fame surged roughly one month later. He then started sending McGinley photos of Rodrigo performing for huge crowds.
“This is the young woman you kicked out of your home!” Braff joked.
The Olivia Rodrigo and John C. McGinley story became a funny pre-fame memory rather than a dramatic celebrity encounter. Rodrigo had not misbehaved. She simply showed up at a party where McGinley had already decided younger guests were not invited.
