Daniel Craig has become a co-owner of a historic London pub. The James Bond actor has purchased a stake in The Horseshoe, a 250-year-old pub in London’s Clerkenwell neighborhood. However, he reportedly overlooked one unusual detail before finalizing the deal: the pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of a hangman named Gilbert.
Daniel Craig reportedly learns about the Horseshoe pub’s haunted history after buying it
In a recent interview with The Times, Craig shared that he was reportedly unaware of the pub’s ghostly reputation when he purchased it. It was Pauline Tucker, the retiring landlady, who later informed him about the alleged haunting. The actor owns the pub alongside Soho House founder Nick Jones and Flat Iron founder Charlie Carroll.
Pauline, who is stepping down after 36 years of running the pub alongside her husband, Richard, said the staff are familiar with its alleged ghost. However, she explained that the presence is not something they can see. “You don’t see him. You feel him,” she explained. While Craig said, “I don’t know what he drinks, but we might have to leave a pint down there . . . ‘Here you are, Gilbert’.”
Daniel, who starred in Casino Royale, explained his decision to buy the pub. He said, “I grew up in pubs. You know the ups and downs of a pub. I know the good and the bad of it. But I also know how important they are in the local community and what they do for an area. There are some great pubs around here, so we’ll be joining a good bunch of people.”
He said they would spruce up the pub while keeping it as a traditional boozer. He also added that they would serve simple food downstairs, including sausages on a stick and ham sandwiches, while the upstairs area would be converted into a dining room.
