Charlotte Gainsbourg, the daughter of French icons Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg, has made it clear that her appreciation for Kanye West has not faded. While attending the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, she said she listens to “everything he does.”
Charlotte Gainsbourg says she listens to everything Kanye West releases despite his controversies
Gainsbourg, who attended the festival during her first visit to South Korea, was there for a screening of Lars von Trier’s 2011 film Melancholia, according to Variety. She told the audience, “I’m not good for recommendations. I have one artist that I listen to, [a] very controversial artist, but I listen to everything he does, and it’s Kanye West. I know, it’s very easy.”
Gainsbourg has previously showcased her admiration for Ye by performing one of his songs. The 55-year-old actress and singer covered his 2010 hit Runaway on the French television show Taratata. She performed her own version of the track from his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. In 2018, she revealed that she was releasing an EP called Take 2. The five-track project included her cover of Runaway.
Ye has been at the center of several controversies over his public statements and social media posts. Among them were repeated antisemitic remarks, including praise for Adolf Hitler. He apologized to the Jewish community in 2023. However, he came under renewed scrutiny in February 2025 after selling T-shirts bearing a swastika. Shopify subsequently removed his store from its platform.
His two scheduled shows in Russia were recently canceled despite being sold out. The 49-year-old rapper was set to take the stage at Gazprom Arena in St. Petersburg on October 10 and 11. Organizers at Say Agency announced the cancellation in a Telegram post on October 1. Ye is yet to comment publicly on the cancellation.
