The Emmys Flips the Script on Broadcast Television in New Major Deal

Emmys viewers will soon need to look beyond broadcast television for TV’s biggest awards night. The Television Academy signed a six-year deal with Prime Video that will move the ceremony to streaming beginning in 2027. The agreement gives the Primetime Emmys one permanent home through 2032. It also ends the long-running broadcast television rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC.

The Emmys leave the broadcast-network rotation for a six-year Prime Video deal

The Television Academy and Prime Video announced the new agreement on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Under the deal, Prime Video will become the exclusive global home of the Emmys starting with the 2027 ceremony.

According to Variety, the agreement is worth around $15 million per year. The six-year package therefore carries an estimated value of roughly $90 million. That also marks a sizable increase from the Academy’s previous arrangement.

Viewers will not need a Prime membership to watch. The Television Academy said the ceremony will stream free worldwide and continue to air live in September. Prime Video will also support year-round Emmy programming and fan experiences.

The new deal followed months of talks about moving the awards away from traditional television. Prime Video had already emerged as a possible new home during negotiations in September. At the time, the potential move also raised questions because Amazon programs compete for Emmys.

Now, those negotiations are complete. The 2026 Emmys on NBC marked the final ceremony under the traditional “Wheel Deal.” For years, that arrangement rotated the awards show among the four major broadcast networks.

Meanwhile, Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said the move gave the Emmys a dedicated home with broader global reach. He also credited the networks for helping establish the ceremony as a major television institution.

Prime Video head Mike Hopkins said Amazon felt honored to become the awards’ “global home” for the next six years.

Overall, the shift reflected how streaming services continued to reshape major live programming. For the Emmys, the Prime Video deal created a fixed destination after decades of broadcast television rotation.

The 2027 ceremony will mark the beginning of that new streaming era.
