Amy Williams recalled being taken into Dr. Randal Haworth’s office with other contestants. “The production team said, ‘We’re gonna take some pictures,’” Williams said.
She described a garage transformed into a photography setup with lights and a white backdrop. Jennifer Patten remembered feeling similarly uncomfortable during the session.
“There is a room with five or six guys,” Patten said. “I’m like, ‘I can’t do this. I’m gonna leave.’” Kari Bravata recalled being completely nude during the photo shoot. “We were totally nude,” she said. “Any dignity that I did have was totally gone.”
Bravata also remembered feeling pressured to participate. “I don’t want to do this. I can’t do this,” she recalled saying. She said contestants were told, “If you don’t do this, you go home.”
The documentary noted that production cameras were absent during the shoot. Bravata said that detail made her question what happened. “Our cameras were not there,” Bravata said. “See, that makes me question it.”
Haworth later addressed the shoot in Behind the Mirror. He said the project involved photographer Dahlen, who had worked with Madonna.
“We asked the girls if they would want to do before-and-afters,” Haworth said. He claimed the photos were intended for a coffee-table book that never materialized.
“I still have those pictures,” Haworth added. “It was an art project, and I kind of forgot about that.” Haworth also maintained that contestants had consented to the photographs. “Oh, yeah. But again, it never saw the light of day,” he said.
Williams disputed that explanation, saying, “that’s not what we were told.” Bravata also questioned why the shoot differed from Haworth’s normal patient photography.
The Swan: Behind the Mirror is currently streaming on Hulu.
