Lauren Graham says the upcoming Gilmore Girls documentary is giving her a fresh perspective on the beloved series. While the HBO Max project is still being made, the actress, who played quick-witted Lorelai Gilmore, revealed that filming has already led to emotional conversations and uncovered information she didn’t even know.
Lauren Graham says the Gilmore Girls documentary uncovered new information and emotional conversations
Graham told in an interview with E! News at Variety’s Power of Women event on Sept. 23, “We’re still in the middle of it, but I have filmed a little bit, and it was pretty emotional.” She added, “And new information for me. Like, these are questions I had never asked Amy (Amy Sherman-Palladino), conversations we had never had.”
Graham admitted she initially wondered whether the cast had anything new to discuss after years of interviews. “My fear was, ‘Gosh, we’ve had all these years of being interviewed. Is there anything new to say?’” she said. However, being brought together in a documentary setting created a different dynamic. “And actually being placed in that environment kind of makes for a different dynamic. So, I think there’ll be a lot for fans to enjoy.”
The documentary is also expected to revisit some of the series’ lesser-known stories and long-running mysteries. Graham teased that one piece of lore involves Mark Ballas’ connection to the show, referring to the speculation surrounding references to his family during Season 4.
While fans wait for those details, Graham has continued to enjoy reconnecting with her former Gilmore Girls family. She recently reunited with Melissa McCarthy, who played Sookie, at Variety’s Power of Women event, where Graham introduced her former co-star.
Graham said she was “so excited to just hang out with her” and described McCarthy as “a special talent” and “a special friend.” She also praised McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone, calling the couple “the most fun to be with.”
