Netflix postpones Gary Glitter docuseries Hunting Gary Glitter after becoming aware of “new legal information”
The streaming platform cited “new legal information we recently became aware of” as the reason. A representative added, “We’re not able to share further detail at this time,” reports Variety. Netflix has also removed the trailer from its YouTube channel. The trailer began with a voiceover saying, “Gary Glitter was one of the biggest rock stars in Britain and a serial child abuser.”
Voltage TV produced the series, with Sam Starbuck (The Tinder Swindler) and Sanjay Singhal (Scoop) serving as executive producers. A synopsis of the series read, “Survivors, journalists and legal experts recount how pop star Gary Glitter used his money, fame and influence to carry out decades of child abuse.”
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, found fame as a pop star during the 1970s and 1980s. He was convicted in 1999 of downloading child sexual abuse material. He faced further convictions over the following years and was deported from several countries. Gadd left the UK in 2000 after being placed on the sex offenders register. He later moved to Vietnam after being deported from Cambodia.
In 2006, a Vietnamese court sentenced him to three years in prison for sexually abusing two underage girls. He was convicted again in the UK in 2015 for sexual offenses committed between 1975 and 1980. The case was part of Operation Yewtree. Gadd was released in February 2023 after serving half of his sentence. However, he was quickly sent back to prison after authorities found evidence of disturbing behavior involving minors. He remains behind bars while serving a 16-year sentence for sexually abusing three young girls.
