Prince Harry got emotional during his speech at the inaugural Invictus Spirit Gala Dinner and Awards. The event marked his first public appearance since returning to the UK. His wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, did not attend the event.
The event was held at the Old Royal Naval College in London on September 17. The Duke of Sussex looked dapper in a sleek black suit, which he paired with a white shirt and black bow tie. He accessorized with British military and royal medals, along with the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order enamel badge.
Harry met old friends and people who support the Invictus movement and remained cheerful throughout the evening, according to a report. He told PEOPLE that he feels “good to be back on British soil.” Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014. The Games were created to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by military personnel who have served their countries.
During the event, he gave an emotional speech honoring those who support the Games. Harry said that Invictus was not created with the intention of having everyone sit back and admire resilience. ” It was created so that people who have served know that when their lives change, we don’t disappear. They served us. We must continue to show up for them, and I guarantee you, we all benefit when we do,” he continued.
When Harry took the podium after being introduced by his friend, James Corden, he became emotional. A video shared by Hello! magazine shows Harry saying, “The games are coming home.” He paused as the crowd erupted in cheers before breaking into a big smile.
