Samsung Pushes to Kill Dua Lipa’s $15M Lawsuit Over TV Boxes

Dua Lipa’s fight with Samsung took another turn after the tech giant asked a judge to dismiss her $15 million lawsuit. The dispute centered on her image appearing on television boxes without her alleged permission.

The singer sued Samsung earlier this year after several cease-and-desist notices allegedly failed to stop the use. Samsung now argued that the packaging never suggested Lipa endorsed its televisions.

Samsung argues its TV boxes did not imply that Dua Lipa endorsed its televisions

Rolling Stone reported that Samsung filed its dismissal request on September 10. Its lawyers argued there was “nothing suggesting plaintiff endorses the televisions.” The company said the image served a different purpose entirely. “The images merely depict the televisions’ on-screen interface,” Samsung’s lawyers wrote, highlighting available applications and content.

The disputed packaging appeared on Samsung televisions in 2025. Lipa’s image appeared alongside Xite Hits, Samsung TV Plus, MLB, Fox Sports, and The First 48. Samsung had also previously blamed a third-party content partner for the image. The company said it received “explicit assurance” that permission covered retail packaging.

“Ms. Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to reflect the content of our third-party partners,” Samsung said. It added that the image came from a content partner providing material for Samsung TV Plus. Lipa’s legal team saw the situation very differently. They filed the lawsuit in a California federal court in May, alleging copyright and trademark infringement.

The filing also accused Samsung of violating Lipa’s right of publicity. Her lawyers claimed the company used her likeness for commercial marketing without authorization or compensation. “Ms. Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use,” her lawsuit stated. The filing also described Samsung’s response to her demands as “dismissive and callous.”

Lipa sought $15 million in damages over the alleged unauthorized use. Samsung’s latest filing did not resolve the dispute, and the judge had not ruled. The controversy also sparked debate among fans online. One person claimed Lipa’s image influenced a Samsung purchase, while another said the packaging convinced them to buy.

A third commenter dismissed that idea, arguing nobody would purchase a television because of the image. Lipa had recently faced another copyright battle involving “Levitating.” In March 2025, Judge Katherine Polk Failla rejected claims that the song copied earlier disco tracks. The judge found only “generic similarities” between the works. She also ruled that the alleged shared musical elements lacked copyright protection.
