‘Dancing with the Stars’ Contestant Shares Unexpected Twist Ahead of Season 35

Guillermo Rodriguez expected Dancing with the Stars rehearsals to help him lose weight. Instead, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! personality revealed an unexpected result after only five days of training.

Rodriguez said he gained 10 pounds despite spending three hours a day rehearsing with professional partner Witney Carson.

Rodriguez shared the surprising update during the September 8 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Jimmy Kimmel asked whether Rodriguez had really gained weight since starting rehearsals.

“I did. Ten pounds,” Rodriguez said.

He immediately offered an explanation for the change.

“After the practice, I go eat right away. I’m so hungry,” he said.

The result surprised Rodriguez because weight loss had helped motivate him to join DWTS Season 35. Earlier in the month, he said previous contestants had told him they lost weight while competing.

“Everybody who does Dancing With the Stars, they tell me they lose weight,” Rodriguez told Entertainment Tonight. “So, I want to lose weight.”

Although the scale moved in the opposite direction, Rodriguez said he enjoyed preparing for the competition.

“It’s going good, Jimmy. It’s a lot of work. My body hurts,” the 55-year-old said. “I’m having fun, Jimmy.”

Rodriguez trained with Carson, who announced that she was expecting her third child with husband, Carson McAllister.

Her pregnancy also became part of an early joke between the partners. Carson said she initially felt nervous about telling Rodriguez.

“And he’s like, ‘I actually feel a little relieved because that means you’ll take a lot of breaks for food,’” Carson recalled.

She agreed with his reasoning and joked, “That is true. That’s very true.”

Despite the unexpected 10-pound gain, Rodriguez continued putting in several hours of dance practice each day.

His experience also challenged his original assumption that joining Dancing with the Stars would automatically help him lose weight.

ABC scheduled DWTS Season 35 to premiere on September 15, with Rodriguez and Carson set to compete for the Mirrorball Trophy.
