Mariska Hargitay is looking ahead to her next career move. After making her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing, the 62-year-old actress said hosting the Emmys could “open a door” to new opportunities. The Law & Order: SVU star will host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.
Mariska Hargitay says hosting the Emmys could “open a door” to whatever comes next in her career
Hargitay told The Hollywood Reporter, “I do actually think the night will open a door — to whatever’s next. It’s exciting not to know what that is yet. That’s the way my bucket list works. It’s not a list of things to check off, it’s a way of going deeper into life.”
The actress is the first non-comedian to host the Emmys in more than three decades, since Angela Lansbury in 1993. In an interview with Deadline, Hargitay revealed that she has enlisted writers from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which ended earlier this year, to help her with Emmys material.
She said, “We’re at the beginning stages, and so we’re throwing out a lot of different ideas. I’m working with an incredible team of writers — the writers from Colbert. We’ve been meeting a lot, discussing a lot, and pitching a lot of ideas. We’re pitching so many ideas.” “So, I don’t know where it’s going to go. We have all these ideas, and now it’s sort of picking the best, editing and cutting it, and [seeing] what we’re going to do,” she added.
Hargitay, who took home an Emmy in 2006 for her role on Law & Order: SVU, recently won two more Emmy Awards for My Mom Jayne, which she directed and starred in. The film explores the life of her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield, who died in a 1967 car crash. Hargitay and her older brothers, Zoltán and Miklós, were in the back seat and survived the accident.
