Teri Hatcher defended one of her most criticized red carpet looks and said she still loved the daring outfit nearly two decades later.
The Desperate Housewives alum revisited her 2006 Grammys dress in a video for HELLO! magazine. Teri Hatcher said the sheer Jean Paul Gaultier design landed her on worst-dressed lists at the time.
Teri Hatcher says she still loves her polarizing Jean Paul Gaultier dress from the 2006 Grammys
Hatcher, 61, said stylist Vincent Boucher helped create the look. The navy dress featured sheer fabric, a plunging neckline and visible micro shorts.
“My stylist at the time, Vincent Boucher, did this and I love this look and people hated me wearing this,” Hatcher recalled.
She said the reaction became especially harsh after the Grammys.
“I got so trashed, I was on whoever’s worst-dressed list,” she said.
Hatcher said the outfit appeared more shocking in 2006 because sheer red carpet fashion had not yet become as common.
“This was 20 years ago [and now] 20 years later, everyone goes to every event totally with see-through clothes. But at the time, nobody was really doing that,” she explained.
The actress also joked that viewers may have struggled to separate her from Susan Mayer, her character on Desperate Housewives.
“I just think no one wanted to see Susan Mayer from Desperate Housewives, who is so vulnerable and clean, dress like this,” she said.
Despite the 2006 Grammys dress backlash, Teri Hatcher said she would wear the outfit again.
She also reflected on other fashion moments during the video. Teri Hatcher remembered walking the Cannes Film Festival red carpet for the first time at age 60. She wore an emerald gown to the 2025 premiere of The History of Sound.
The actress said she normally felt intimidated on red carpets. However, advice from fashion editor Carine Roitfeld helped her enjoy that experience.
Teri Hatcher also looked back at a 2024 event with her daughter, Emerson Tenney. The pair wore coordinating red dresses.
Her next major style-focused role also awaits her onstage. Hatcher will play Miranda Priestly in the West End production of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical beginning Oct. 20.
