Sean Palmer recalls learning his ‘Sex and the City’ movie storyline had been cut by the studio

Sean Palmer appeared on the latest episode of Kristin Davis’ podcast Are You A Charlotte? He revealed that Sex and the City film originally had a different storyline. Previously, his character Marcus was supposed to marry late Willie Garson’s character Stanford Blatch. However, their scenes were cut from the final film.

Palmer said, “I was supposed to be in the film. The film was supposed to start with Willie’s and my wedding. And you’re supposed to think it was Big and [Carrie].”

Palmer later received a call informing him that he would no longer be part of the film and his character would not appear.

Palmer said, “I think it was [the show’s executive producer John P.] Melfi, and he was like, ‘Look, we got a call from the studio and… they don’t want tertiary characters. So I think in the film… I’m on Carrie’s guest list.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, he added, “Of course that was disappointing that it didn’t happen. It was very heartbreaking.”

Palmer explained that later he understood the storyline change in the final cut when he saw the episodes.

He said, “I watched all the episodes, and I watched their back and forth, and I just thought, as an audience member, I was like, ‘They’re gonna end up together.’ That was my feeling. And that’s after having watched it — and having been the boyfriend!”

Stanford and Marcus began dating in Season 5 of the series. The end of their relationship was not shown on the series. However, Stanford later married Anthony, played by Mario Cantone, in the 2010 sequel Sex and the City 2.

Sex and the City was a popular HBO series that later spawned films in 2008 and 2010.
