King Charles made one thing unmistakably clear after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to Britain. Despite their renewed presence in the UK, the couple remained private citizens rather than working royals.
The clarification came after their sudden return reportedly created confusion among officials. Palace guidance reaffirmed that Harry and Meghan’s royal roles had not changed since their 2020 departure.
King Charles sent a formal letter to government officials over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
According to the Daily Mail, the King instructed his senior official, the Lord Chamberlain, to send guidance to selected government, military and royal representatives. The letter explained that Harry and Meghan’s existing status remained unchanged.
The guidance reiterated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped away from representative duties in January 2020. Their decision to live as private citizens continued to be respected under the previous Sandringham agreement. It also stated that their His and Her Royal Highness styles remained “in abeyance” and were not used. Their charitable activities were described as personal matters conducted privately.
The letter further clarified that official questions involving courtesies or public funding should go through Buckingham Palace. Any operational security concerns, meanwhile, should remain with the relevant police authorities. That point was particularly notable following Harry’s long-running legal battle over his UK security arrangements. His return with Meghan and their children had also prompted renewed questions about how their protection would work.
Officials reportedly insisted the guidance contained nothing controversial. Instead, they described it as a straightforward clarification designed to avoid confusion following the Sussexes’ return. Still, the need for the letter highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Harry and Meghan’s new life in Britain. Sources close to the couple had reportedly discussed plans for increased charitable activity while living in the UK.
The publication noted that the wider security framework remained with the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec. Officials also confirmed the letter went to a select group of senior figures. With 98 Lord Lieutenants representing the monarch across the UK, the guidance helped establish where official responsibilities began and ended.
For now, Harry and Meghan could build their lives in Britain without resuming royal duties. Their return changed their location, but it did not change their royal status.
