Menendez Brothers Get Major Parole Update After Long Wait

Erik Menendez and his brother, Lyle Menendez, may get another chance at parole much sooner than expected. The brothers originally faced a wait until 2028. However, a new decision has dramatically shortened that timeline.

The Menendez brothers’ parole hearing could now happen as early as March 2027. According to TMZ, California parole officials approved administrative reviews for both brothers. Those reviews allowed officials to advance their next parole suitability hearings.

The March dates remain tentative. The California Board of Parole Hearings publishes and regularly updates its official hearing schedule. The development gives Erik and Lyle Menendez another chance at freedom roughly a year earlier than previously expected.

Erik faced his first parole hearing on Aug. 21, 2025. However, commissioners denied his release for three years. The following day, Lyle Menendez received the same three-year denial.

During Erik’s hearing, commissioner Robert Barton acknowledged the strong support from his family. Still, Barton concluded that Erik did not qualify for parole at that time. According to the Associated Press, Barton stressed that family forgiveness does not automatically establish parole suitability.

A May 2025 resentencing decision opened the door for the Menendez brothers to seek parole. The judge changed their punishment from life without parole to 50 years to life. Erik and Lyle have spent decades in prison for the 1989 killings of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

Meanwhile, their legal efforts have continued beyond parole. Last year, the brothers criticized a judge after he rejected a new trial. Their case has also remained part of the wider pop-culture conversation. Kim Kardashian has publicly advocated for their release.

For now, the earlier hearing does not guarantee freedom for either brother. The parole board will still decide whether Erik or Lyle meets the requirements for release.

Still, the new timeline gives both men their next opportunity considerably sooner than the original 2028 schedule.
