Netflix has officially announced a new three-part documentary series titled The One About Matthew Perry. The project will be the first in-depth documentary about the late Friends star. Perry died on October 28, 2023, at age 54 after he was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home. Authorities determined that he died from the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning listed as a contributing factor.

The docuseries will explore Perry’s rise as a comedy star and his lasting legacy as one of the world’s most beloved characters, Chandler Bing. It will feature a first-time interview with his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, along with conversations with his lifelong best friends. It will also include previously unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family’s private archive, states Netflix.
Perry’s sister, a licensed psychotherapist, writer, and speaker, said, “It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction.”
Bowick said he played a major role in shaping who she is today. She also said he influenced the person she strives to be and the work to which she has devoted her life. Bowick described Perry as someone with a beautiful heart and generous spirit.
She added that even during his darkest moments, he could still make people laugh and feel loved. She hopes the series will give everyone who loved Perry, whether personally or from afar, a deeper understanding of who he truly was, and also hopes it will highlight the legacy he leaves behind.
Throughout his life, Perry battled addiction to alcohol, prescription painkillers, and ketamine. He opened up about his decades-long struggle in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. His story will now receive a closer look at his life and struggles in the upcoming docuseries, directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson. It is set to debut on Netflix on October 27. The release comes just one day before the third anniversary of Perry’s death.
