The issue involved his hand gestures behind an ASL interpreter. The filmmaker has now addressed the matter and called it “thoughtless idiocy.”

Mel Gibson apologizes after making hand gestures behind an ASL interpreter at Fan Expo Canada

During the Canadian Fan Expo, the 70-year-old made a hand gesture behind an ASL interpreter. Speaking to TMZ about the incident, Gibson said that his action had no ill intent and apologized for it.

Gibson said, “Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed.”

“There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it,” he added

During the Saturday Fan Expo in Toronto, Canada, Mel Gibson’s hand gesture sparked mixed reactions. Some people felt that the Braveheart star was mocking the interpreter, while others criticized him over the gesture. However, several people also pointed out that it was important to understand Mel Gibson’s intent and the context behind the gesture before making assumptions.

However, after facing backlash, the filmmaker has now offered an explanation and made it clear that the act was not intentional.

Mel Gibson has faced backlash over his statements and actions before. The controversy dates back to 1983. Over the years, the Hacksaw Ridge star has faced criticism for several reasons. These include a DUI arrest, anti-gay statements, the 2010 controversy involving his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, and derogatory remarks.

The 2026 Fan Expo Canada took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Center in downtown Toronto and ran from August 27 to August 30. FAN EXPO HQ organized the event.
