Ron DeSantis says Mike Caruso could face severe punishment if convicted
Mike Caruso, a Palm Beach County Clerk of Court appointed by DeSantis in 2025, could reportedly face the death penalty.
DeSantis discussed the possible punishment over alleged child sex charges during a press conference on Tuesday, according to a video posted by WFLA on Facebook.
He said, “We’re the first state to reintroduce the death penalty for pedophiles. I’m proud that I signed that into law. I’m proud that we have very strong penalties for people that abuse children.”
He said that “If he is convicted, he’s gonna be in for a world of hurt.” While talking about his appointment, he mentioned that Caruso was “well-regarded in the community” and was a “clean vet.”
He shared that one thing the state has done better than others is “introducing the death penalty for pedophiles.”
The governor also said that the state initiated the investigation into Caruso. He added, “state law enforcement did it, and charges were brought by statewide prosecutors.”
DeSantis said that it was an easy decision to remove Caruso from his position after the alleged charges. Caruso was suspended after the alleged charges.
According to PEOPLE, Caruso was arrested on Tuesday on allegations involving sexually abusing a male child, who is related to him. He is facing charges of kidnapping, lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition, luring or enticing a child, and child abuse.
In 2023, Florida expanded the death penalty law to allow severe punishment for charges including sexually abusing children under the age of 12. Citing the law, DeSantis stated that Caruso might face severe punishment if found guilty.
