Shane Gillis, known for Tires and Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, almost skipped UFC Freedom 250 at the White House. While speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience on Thursday, August 13, Gillis said he changed his mind several times before finally attending the June event. He shared what made him attend it.
Comedian Shane Gillis says he repeatedly tried to skip UFC Freedom 250 at the White House despite Joe Rogan convincing him to attend
On the podcast with Joe Rogan, Gillis said, “Day-of, I was like, ‘I shouldn’t f***ing go.’” Still, Gillis kept trying to get out of going. He said he canceled his plans four times, with his final cancellation coming the day before the White House UFC event.
However, everything changed when he learned that dirt bikes would be part of the White House spectacle. “I said yes and canceled like four times,” Gillis said. “The last time I canceled was the day before. And then I saw they were doing f***ing dirt bikes on the front lawn and I was like, ‘I gotta see this,’” he added. He mentioned, “I was at the [Comedy] Cellar and I was like, ‘I don’t feel like f***ing dealing with it.’”
Meanwhile, Gillis admitted that his hesitation was also connected to his feelings about the Trump administration. “It’s a crazy time to be like ‘I support this,’” he said. Even after showing up, he avoided the VIP section because he did not want photographers to capture him with other celebrities. “F*** no,” Gillis said. “I knew photos were going to be taken. I stood outside in the rain. I’m like, ‘I’m not getting my picture taken.’”
When Rogan brought up Gillis’ old photo with Donald Trump, the comedian explained that his views had changed. “Back then when I was taking that picture I was like, ‘This guy’s gonna release the Epstein files and no more wars.’ I like that,’” Gillis said. “Also, still didn’t vote for him. Not a big deal.”
Rogan also admitted that he initially did not want to be involved in the White House event. However, he eventually embraced the unusual experience. He said, “It’s just never going to happen again. It was so insane.”
