Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah revoked Raabi’atul Adawiyyah’s royal titles.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah issued the decree removing Adawiyyah’s royal title. She previously held the title “Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri.” The New Straits Times reported the decision through Brunei’s national broadcaster.
Adawiyyah, 33, married Prince Abdul Malik n 2015. Prince Abdul Malik is the sultan’s second son with Queen Saleha. He currently ranks fourth in line to the Bruneian throne.
The couple shares four daughters. Their children’s royal titles will remain unchanged. Adawiyyah, however, is no longer considered part of the royal family.
The Office of the Grand Chamberlain confirmed the title revocation. Officials said her conduct was “unbecoming of a spouse” of royalty. They did not explain what actions prompted the decision.
The statement also said Adawiyyah’s actions tarnished the monarchy’s reputation. Officials added that she showed a “lack of respect” toward Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. No specific incident was identified in the announcement.
Representatives for the Brunei royal household were contacted for comment. No additional details about the controversy were immediately provided. As a result, the reasoning behind the decree remains largely undisclosed.
The decision came from Brunei’s longtime ruler, who is 80 years old. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has ruled the country since 1967. He became sultan after his father abdicated the throne.
He has also served as Brunei’s prime minister since 1984. The sultan remains one of the world’s longest-reigning monarchs. Brunei is also among the world’s remaining absolute monarchies.
The royal family has not publicly detailed the alleged conduct. Adawiyyah’s title removal therefore remains surrounded by unanswered questions. For now, officials have only cited her alleged lack of respect.
