Brad Pitt is opening up about another major shift in his life after years of speaking candidly about giving up alcohol. The F1 star has now shared how his relationship with drinking has changed and the limits he says he follows today.
Brad Pitt explains how his relationship with alcohol changed after seven years of sobriety
Brad Pitt is no longer sober after abstaining from alcohol for seven years. During a new Esquire interview, the actor revealed that he eventually began drinking again, although he described his current approach as much more restrained.
“I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon,” Pitt said. He explained that he resumed drinking “in a more restrained manner” and acknowledged that becoming overconfident about it had not worked well for him.
Pitt said he can now have a few glasses of wine, but not a large amount. He added that he has to approach drinking carefully, while Esquire noted that he values his mornings and does not want to lose them after drinking too much the night before.
The admission marks a new chapter in the Brad Pitt sobriety journey. Pitt previously discussed quitting alcohol following his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie. In a 2019 New York Times profile, he revealed that he spent a year and a half in Alcoholics Anonymous. He said he had removed his “drinking privilege.”
Pitt revisited that period during a June 2025 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. He recalled being in a difficult place when he first attended AA and said he “needed rebooting.” He also described the openness he encountered in the group as “amazing.”
Now, Brad Pitt drinks in moderation, according to his own account. His latest comments come after a busy stretch that included the Brad Pitt F1 press tour and several subsequent film shoots.
Away from work, Pitt has continued his relationship with Ines de Ramon, whom he has dated for several years. He told Esquire that de Ramon often travels with him and jokingly praised her packing skills.
