Travis Kelce is heading into another Kansas City Chiefs season with a new title: husband. But sports commentator Bill Simmons is wondering whether married life with Taylor Swift could leave the veteran tight end less locked in on football. Simmons raised the question while assessing Kansas City’s offense and Patrick Mahomes’ return.

During the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons and Mina Kimes discussed the Chiefs ahead of the 2026 NFL season. While weighing Mahomes’ prospects after ACL surgery, Simmons pointed to Kelce’s age and recent wedding.
“Kelce just got married and is in his mid-30s,” Simmons said. When Kimes laughed and pressed him on the connection, he added, “I don’t know if his eye is on the prize.”
Simmons appeared to be speaking partly in jest, but he continued questioning whether the July 3 wedding had shifted Kelce’s attention. Simmons also wondered where the 36-year-old’s “head’s at” heading into the season.
That skepticism runs against Reid’s assessment. The Chiefs coach told NFL Network this week that Kelce “came back in good shape” and is “focused and ready to go.” Reid praised the veteran’s willingness to take every practice snap and said his energy remains contagious.
Reid had already pushed back on wedding-distraction talk before Kelce and Swift married. In June, he said he had seen “no distractions” as Kelce prepared for both the wedding and football season.
Kelce returned to training shortly after marrying Swift, shifting his attention toward his 14th NFL season. He also signed a new Chiefs deal earlier this year after retirement speculation followed Kansas City’s disappointing 2025 campaign.
His longtime connection with Mahomes remains central to the offense. Kelce has spent his entire NFL career in Kansas City, and Mahomes is expected to rely on him as one of his most trusted targets again this season.
Swift and Kelce married July 3 in New York City after months of intense attention around their plans. Kelce later returned to New Heights without offering the post-wedding recap many fans expected.
Simmons may be predicting a rough year, but Reid’s assessment paints a different picture. Once the season begins, Kelce’s play will provide the clearest answer.
