During President Donald Trump‘s rally on Aug. 5 in Las Vegas, an emotional moment occurred. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo paused his remarks after some people in the crowd booed while he mentioned fallen police officer Austin Abdelnabi. Joe Lombardo immediately corrected the crowd and then gave the officer a moment of silence.

According to PEOPLE, Lombardo spoke at Red Rock Casino before President Trump took the stage. He began to pay tribute to Officer Austin Abdelnabi, who died in the line of duty earlier this month. As Lombardo said the officer’s name, loud boos came from part of the audience. Lombardo immediately replied, “No, no, we’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away here recently.”
Lombardo then asked for a moment of silence for the fallen officer. Austin Abdelnabi was 30 years old and served as a Marine before he joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2023. He died on Aug. 4 during a gun battle after officers responded to a report about an armed man in east Las Vegas. Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Abdelnabi’s sacrifice was heroic and a man who gave his life for the community.
Abdelnabi was also honored by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in a Facebook post on Aug. 6. The department expressed gratitude to the community, law enforcement partners, and people nationwide for their prayers and support. It also asked everyone to keep Abdelnabi’s wife, loved ones, friends, and the entire department in their thoughts. President Donald Trump that day traveled to Las Vegas to promote his administration’s tax measures and economic agenda before the November midterm elections.
