Role Model just revealed exactly how Dakota Johnson ended up on his new album. He also explained why he skipped Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s MSG wedding.
One of his collaborators wandered into the studio, got talked into a cameo, and nailed it on the first try. He got candid about that moment, the A-list wedding he had to skip, and the stage name he still cannot stand.

Role Model got candid in a new interview, posing for the cover of NYLON Guys, out now. The 29-year-old singer-songwriter, born Tucker Pillsbury, discussed his upcoming album, “Chuck Timely & the Hourglass“. He also discussed how Dakota Johnson came to feature on the Role Model album.
He said he weighed several options for the part before the idea of casting Johnson came up in the studio. “I had a lot of names to pick from for that, and then Dakota came to the studio one day, and Mason [Stoops, guitarist and producer] was like, ‘Why don’t you do it?’…She was like, ‘I’ll do it,’ and stood right up and got in the booth and knocked it out better than we could have imagined,” he said.
Role Model also addressed missing Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s MSG wedding, pointing to his schedule. “I couldn’t go…I was busy in the middle of an album rollout, but it looked amazing,” he said.
He was just as blunt about his own moniker, admitting he is not a fan of it. “I think Role Model is the dumbest stage name, but I’m in too deep,” he said.
The singer also brushed off any pressure to replicate the viral success of “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.” “I think it’s because I love ‘Sally,’ and I’ll be performing that till I’m in a wheelchair, but lyrically, that song could have been written by a 5-year-old, especially the bridge, which is the most famous part. Those are some of my worst lyrics. So I didn’t feel pressure because, to me, the bar was really low,” he said.
He also looked back on his lean early stretch in Los Angeles, when he bounced between friends’ couches and short-term rentals. “I remember texting my sister for $5 so that I could get a McDonald’s breakfast for the day, saving half of it for dinner,” he said.
Role Model credited the album with pushing him into therapy. “Making the album and writing all those songs — I think me going to therapy now is a result of that,” he said, adding that dating brought “a lot of self-discovery.”
