Dr. Fauci’s Diaries Expose High-Stakes Oval Office Drama Across Presidents

Anthony Fauci‘s newly released diaries recounted Barack Obama‘s blunt private words about Donald Trump

The pages captured a candid phone call between Obama and Fauci during the COVID era.

A trove of private journals from one of the pandemic’s most polarizing figures has spilt into public view. Inside, a former president vents in blunt, unguarded language about a political rival and his family. The pages paint a rare behind-the-scenes portrait of tension at the highest levels of power.

Newly released Fauci diary entries recount Barack Obama’s private comments about Donald Trump and his son

Newly released diary entries from Anthony Fauci pulled back the curtain on a private phone call with Barack Obama. In the pages, Obama vented about Donald Trump and his eldest son. Republican Sen. Rand Paul released more than 1,000 pages of the typo-filled journals over the weekend. As a result, the Fauci Trump diary quickly reignited debate over the pandemic years.

One striking entry recounted a supportive call Fauci said he received from Obama in November 2021. Fauci wrote that he told Obama about attacks from far-right Republicans. Notably, he flagged on page 914 that Donald Trump Jr. sold T-shirts and sweatshirts reading “Fauci kills puppies” to raise campaign money.

Then Obama reacted bluntly, according to the entry. Fauci recorded that Obama called Trump Jr. “A f****** moron.” Obama apologized for the crude language, Fauci wrote, before describing Trump as “a hopeless idiot who was a pathologic liar.” Obama had not publicly addressed the account.

Fauci framed the call as private encouragement. “He [Obama] was very upset that none of the moderate Republicans was actually speaking out on my behalf and was distancing themselves from all of this terrible slanderous behavior against me,” Fauci wrote. He also called it “an incredibly memorable phone call.”

The Trump Fauci comments did not end there. Elsewhere, Fauci vented about the president himself. For instance, he branded Trump an “obnoxious adolescent” in a March 29, 2021, entry. His notes tracked a bond that soured across the Fauci COVID response.

The puppy claim stemmed from a study on sand fly experiments that a journal later corrected in October 2021. Meanwhile, Fauci led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022.

After the release, Fauci testified before a Senate committee about the coronavirus origins. During the three-hour hearing Wednesday, he invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times. He also accused Paul of chasing a criminal case against him.
