Kim Kardashian has decided not to collect a six-figure legal award after a man said the payment would financially ruin him. The decision ends a legal fight that started over a mistaken social media post. The case involved a man with the same name as a Texas death row inmate. Both sides have finally reached an agreement, resolving the dispute.
The plaintiff said paying Kim Kardashian’s legal fees would financially ruin him
TMZ first reported that Kim agreed to waive the money after reaching a deal with Ivan Cantu. A legal representative for Kim told the outlet, “This is a lawsuit that should never have been filed.” The representative added, “The Court agreed and threw it out and ordered that [Ivan Cantu] pay Kim’s legal fees.” The statement continued, “Kim agreed to waive those fees and so [Ivan] has dismissed his case with prejudice.”
The lawsuit started after Kim posted the wrong picture when seeking aid for a man on death row called Ivan Cantu. She mistakenly posted a picture of another man with the same name. That man sued Kim and asked for damages because he said the post harmed him. Kim also denied any wrongdoing and said she removed the post after discovering she had shared the wrong photo.
The court rejected all of Ivan’s claims and ruled in favor of Kim. The judge also awarded Kim $167,000 in legal fees. Ivan argued that Kim did not need the money because she is a billionaire. He also stated that paying the legal bill would bankrupt him.
After the judge denied Ivan’s request to reconsider the legal-fee award, he initially appealed the decision before later dropping the appeal as part of the agreement with Kim. The case is now officially closed, with Kim waiving the $167,000 award.
