Elton John has changed his songwriting process after losing most of his eyesight, according to longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. The singer reportedly developed a new creative approach while working on his upcoming album. His health struggles have forced him to adapt a process that remained familiar for decades.

Radar Online reported John has experienced significant vision loss since suffering a severe eye infection in France in 2024. He has reportedly been blind in his right eye and has limited vision in his left. The condition has made it difficult for him to continue writing music as he previously did.
Taupin recently explained how John’s eyesight affected their songwriting partnership during an interview with Rolling Stone. He said their latest collaboration was “a whole different ballgame” for the legendary musician. John reportedly could no longer sit at his piano and read lyrics while composing.
Instead, John created instrumental tracks and sent them to Taupin for lyrics. “He basically came up with instrumental tracks and threw basically three or four of them at me,” Taupin explained. The songwriter then contributed lyrics while John also worked with other collaborators.
Taupin said John created the new album with producer Andrew Watt. The record was reportedly expected to arrive early next year.
A source close to the songwriting partnership said John refused to let his vision challenges stop his creativity. “Elton has refused to let his eyesight challenges stop him making music,” the source claimed. They added that he had “adapted his entire creative process” to continue working.
The singer acknowledged the difficulty of adapting to his changed circumstances. “You get emotional, but you have to get used to it,” he said. John added that he remained grateful for his family and the life he had built.
John’s partnership with Taupin continues after more than five decades. Their latest collaboration shows how John has adapted his creative process without abandoning his passion for music.
