Miley Cyrus thought Maxx Morando had simply planned a long-awaited trip to Japan. The singer later admitted that she had no idea he was waiting for the right moment to change their relationship forever.

Maxx Morando recounted the proposal in a July 28 interview with Wonderland Magazine. The Liily drummer said neither he nor Cyrus had visited Japan before, although both had wanted to go for years.
Morando said the couple had discussed a possible engagement before the vacation. That made secrecy difficult, especially because Cyrus was not exactly hiding her suspicions. He decided he “had to be really sneaky” to protect the surprise.
After spending several days in Tokyo, they traveled to Kyoto. Morando waited until the final moments of their last day, hoping the delay would throw Cyrus “off the scent.”
The opportunity arrived while they explored the grounds near their hotel. Morando spotted a small outer garden across a plank bridge, despite a sign indicating that visitors should not enter. He persuaded Cyrus to follow him into the secluded, forest-like space.
Cyrus turned away to record the scenery. Morando then dropped to one knee and tapped her on the shoulder. Photos placed the couple in Japan around late October and early November, but they have not disclosed the exact proposal date. Morando admitted that he was sweating, could feel his heart pounding, and worried that he might fumble or drop the ring.
Cyrus had already described Morando’s proposal during a December interview on “Good Morning America.” She said she normally likes to control every situation but had “completely surrendered” during the trip. “I was so, so, so surprised,” she recalled.
The engagement became public after Cyrus wore her ring to the Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere on Dec. 1. Since then, the couple has largely kept their relationship private, while reports suggest they envision a small, meaningful wedding.
