Princess Diana’s wedding day was reportedly the “worst day” of her life, while it was her father’s “proudest” day. Recent claims from former royal butler Paul Burrell have shed new light on Princess Diana’s wedding day.
The heartbreaking truth behind Princess Diana’s wedding day
According to former royal butler Paul Burrell, Princess Diana later described her wedding day as the “worst” day of her life.
According to InStyle, Burrell told Marie Claire that Diana’s father, Earl Johnnie Spencer, felt proud to walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.
He recalled, “Diana said to me, ‘Have you seen the footage, Paul, of me walking down the aisle?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’ve watched it many times.’ And she said, ‘It was my father’s proudest day.’ I thought that was very odd, that it wasn’t her proudest day.”
He further said Princess Diana told him she was worried that Camilla Parker Bowles would be present at the wedding. He recalled, “She said, ‘Do you see me looking from side to side? I was looking for her. I knew she’d be there. And she was in the fourth row at my wedding.’”
Earlier, in the documentary The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess, Diana’s friend Penny Thornton said, “Charles told her that he didn’t love her. I think Charles didn’t want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her, and it was devastating for Diana.”
Burrell added, “You’ve got to look through the lens of time and not now. Times have changed. Back then, he was being hounded by his family to find a bride. He was becoming an old bachelor, and his job was to find a bride and produce an heir and a spare.”
Previously, Diana said there were “three of us in this marriage,” referring to the widely discussed relationship between Princess Diana, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.
Reports have also claimed Diana told her father the royal wedding was off a month before the ceremony. However, Spencer reportedly reassured her. Princess Diana and Prince Charles married on July 29, 1981. The couple had two children, Prince William and Prince Harry.
